About Me
It’s never too early or too late to learn
Hello, I'm Jerome!
Welcome to my musical world, where I've spent years nurturing the love of music in students of all ages. It's a pleasure to share a bit about myself and my journey in the world of music and sign language interpreting.
My musical journey began at an early age, and it ultimately led me to pursue a degree in music with a focus on piano at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA. Those formative years honed my skills and deepened my passion for teaching music.
In 1994, I embarked on a new chapter in my life by moving to the vibrant city of Austin, Texas. It was there that I began my career as a music educator in 1995. Teaching music has been a true calling, allowing me to pass on the joy and magic of music to countless students.
In 1996, a unique opportunity presented itself when I started working at the Texas School for the Blind. There, I had the privilege of working with the deaf/blind student population. This experience introduced me to the world of American Sign Language (ASL), a language that bridges gaps and fosters communication for individuals who are Deaf or deaf/ blind. My time at the school not only allowed me to teach music but also gave me the chance to become proficient in ASL.
Eager to expand my horizons and deepen my understanding of ASL, I enrolled at Austin Community College, where I majored in sign language interpreting. This path has opened up a world of possibilities for me. I've had the privilege of working as a freelance interpreter in the San Marcos area since 2014.
Teaching music and interpreting sign language are not just professions for me; they are my passions. Both endeavors have enriched my life in countless ways, allowing me to connect with diverse communities and individuals.
When I'm not teaching or interpreting, you'll likely find me immersed in music, exploring new compositions, or singing bass in our church choir. I'm also an avid advocate for accessibility and inclusion, and I'm committed to making education and communication accessible to all.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about me and my journey. If you're interested in music lessons or have any questions about sign language interpreting, please feel free to reach out. I look forward to connecting with you and sharing the joy of music and of American Sign Language.
Musically yours, Jerome
